Rachel speaks about her Cardiff Half Marathon challenge for Trinity Centre:
How did you hear about the Trinity Centre?
I heard about The Trinity Centre through being a Cardiff local. I knew The Trinity Centre back when it was Trinity Methodist Church and then have witnessed the mission which has transformed it to what it is today. I went along to the Open Day and I was blown away by the diversity in unity, and also the food!
Why did you want to raise money for this charity?
I want to raise money for this charity to support the communities it is developing for the most vulnerable in our society. I think that Cardiff as a whole is good at welcoming asylum seekers and refugees, but The Trinity Centre shows that they belong. There is a lot of hate and fear going around regarding refugees and asylum seekers and I want to contribute to those making a difference to be a light in dark places.
What is your background?
I’m a lifelong Cardiffian and proud, with a five year stint in Aberystwyth studying Drama and Theatre and working as Opportunities Officer at the Students Union. I’ve worked as a Learning Support Assistant in a variety of schools including a special educational school and a primary school with a richly diverse and multicultural population. Skip to now and I’m the Children and Families Worker at Penarth Methodist Church. My general principle is that I like to have fun and I like to ensure that everyone else, all and all, is able to have fun!
How do you train?
With a lot of persistence!
Is this your first half marathon?
Yes, and the closer we get to it the more terrified Ibecome…
Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
The youth group which I am one of the leaders for fundraised for The Trinity Centre by going on a Cake Walk, consisting of baking cakes in one church and then hand delivering them to another church 2.5 miles away in time for their post service tea and coffee! Their aim was to raise enough money to buy the centre a pool table, and I think they raised enough for at least three!
